Update: Rest/Sleep talk method does not work. The user will select only rest, which fails, because it is already asleep- the last move that is automatically removed when in battle is never selected, as well as ----- never selected.
As ----- is immediately replaced when learning a move, I conclude that ----- is a normal, empty move. The only glitch happening here is that the game doesn't count ----- as a move, so it counts the others only. This is why it removes one(two if there are two -----) move from the battle selection. For example, a smeargle knowing -----, rest, sleep talk, and Doom desire would have doom desire missing in battle. This is because when the game thinks of what moves to display, it counts the number of moves. 3, since ----- doesn't count. It displays the first three moves, since normally the only three moves are the first three. It displays (nothing/-----), rest, sleep talk, (nothing/doom desire) (The nothings are never displayed) When rest and sleep talks pp ran out, smeargle only struggles until faint or win or switch out or pp restoration....
In conclusion, ----- is literally only an empty move space. Not selectable. Only glitch is the game not displaying the last 1/2 moves. This is not even considered a glitch as the ----- would never occur before the other moves naturally in the game.

Hmm, try putting the Pokemon to sleep (by rest, or friend using hypnosis, or other means) and then have it use sleep talk. (Sleep talk randomly selects a move and uses it) Doubt this will work, as some moves are already programmed to not be selected... Perhaps ----- isn't though *shrug* I will do my own testing as well
